Appearance: Celes has bright yellow-blonde hair. The top half is pulled back with a silver clip while the bottom half flows down her back freely, reaching past her tailbone. Her eyes are blue-gray and cold, belying her serious nature. She has small dangling silver earrings and a tight thin silver necklace. She wears a yellow leather vest, purple shirt that tucks into yellow leather pants. Her boots are made of the same material, though are a tan in color, as are her arm warmers, which cover her wrists to just below her shoulders.

Personality: Celes doesn't dish shit out and she doesn't take anyone else's shit. She's no-nonsense and won't hesitate to tell you how you've pinned her wrong. She's stubborn and smart, doesn't take things lightly, and is serious to a fault. She's also extremely cynical, assuming people are speaking their worst about her or just saying things to be nice without actually meaning them. She assumes the worst of any situation, though all of this belies her inner insecurity. She was doubted by the people she loved and trusted most and that doubt sewed a seed in her own mind. She gives off the vibes that she'd rather be alone, when really she's desperate for contact and acceptance. She's hard to get to know at first, but once those barriers are broken, one can see that she is a kind and caring individual. It's almost as though she's either afraid to show that she cares or she just doesn't know how.

Abilities: Celes is a former general, meaning she's quite adept at strategic thinking. She's also extremely good with swords and can even dual wield. She prefers the comfort of having more than one, though she will mourn the loss of her swords, Illumina and Ragnarok. Her magical abilities are severely weakened in Manhattan, expending much more of her energy reserves than they used to. Her special ability, Runic, has about a 10-15% chance of actually working here. At home it always worked once, now it rarely ever does and she spends more time dodging spells than absorbing them. (Runic in canon allows her to absorb spells and turn them into mp, energy reserves.) As far as her personality goes, Celes can distance herself in times of high emotion, letting the side of her that was trained as a general take over.

Weaknesses: Along that vein, when this general side of her takes over, she's less likely to appear as though she cares. This in turn can push people further away from her, wounding her inside and making her think she needs to distance herself to avoid this happening again. It's a lovely Catch 22. Celes has an extremely hard to get to know soft side and the difficulty in finding that side can turn people off to getting to know her. She cares, but has a hard time showing it, thus distancing herself even when she yearns for acceptance. So when she doesn't get that acceptance or when someone doubts her again, it really cuts her deeper than it should, deeper than she'll let anyone know.

Stand or Die
Celes was raised by Cid, who she calls "Grandpa." At a young age, she was drafted to work with the Empire, infused with magicite from the Espers, and trained to be a Magitech Knight. She's known for killing ruthlessly and being one of the Empire's three most powerful generals. Eventually, however, she realizes that she's been warped from the begining and that Kefka and Gestahl really don't want the best for the world. She turns against them and is imprisoned in South Figaro, where Locke rescues her. She asks him why and he promises to protect her, bringing her back to the Returners hideout and protecting her from the people who don't trust her.

Word reaches them that the Empire is after the Esper behind the hideout in Narsche. Once the Empire's army is stopped, they bring Terra to the Esper. After she flies off, they discover that several Espers lie in Vector, the capital of the Empire. One might be able to help Terra, so they go to find out. They need an airship to reach the capital, so they enlist a ploy to capture Setzer Gabiani's airship. This ploy involves Celes dressing up as an opera singer named Maria and performing in the Opera "Aria de Mezzo Caraterre." For Celes, the Opera speaks to her of Locke and so she sings it with all her heart. Setzer kidnaps her at the end of the second act and takes her to his airship, where she later helps the others up. They confront Setzer and through a mild gamble that Celes cleverly used to trap Setzer in, they get him to agree to take them to the capital.

Sneaking inside Vector, they obtain several magicite shards, which are the remains of Espers when they wish to give their powers up fully to someone. Kefka arrives not long after and mutters things about how Celes was double-teaming the Returners, leading them into a trap, and causes the group to momentarily doubt her. She is distraught over this, though quickly takes the initiative and warps away with Kefka, silently telling Locke to trust her for once.

She misses quite a lot of the goings on with the Returners as she works with General Leo. Eventually, Gestahl asks the Returners to join forces with Leo and Celes and go to Thamasa in search of the Espers that were previously released (during the time Celes was with Leo). Contact is established, but just as it appears that the Espers are willing to come to a truce, Gestahl and Kefka arrive, turning the Espers to magicite. General Leo is killed during this and Celes permanently rejoins the Returners. Kefka and Gestahl find the three statues of the goddesses and the island where the Espers' world was located lifts up into the air and becomes the Floating Continent.

The Returners then have to go stop Kefka and Gestahl, the former of which ends up killing the latter. Kefka then gives Celes a sword, after knocking the others down, and tells her to kill them. She turns her sword on him instead, but can't do much. He then moves the statues out of alignment, which breaks up the land masses below them and literally reshapes the earth. Shadow jumps in then and holds Kefka up until the others can escape. Unfortunately, the airship gets hit and goes down in a fiery mess.

Celes wakes up a year later, stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere with Cid, "Grandpa." He'd nursed her to health at the expense of his own life and no matter how hard she tries, she can't get enough fish for him and he passes on. Grief-stricken over this, Celes takes herself to a cliff on the other side of the island with the intent of committing suicide. She fails at this and wakes up to see a dove with a bandana around its neck.. Locke's bandana. Her eyes close for a few moments and that is when she finds herself waking up on the streets of Manhattan.
